Dr. Barry McCarron serves as the Head of Business and Industry Support at South West College. His academic journey includes earning a PhD in the monitoring of indoor radon concentrations in certified passive house buildings. He holds an honours degree in Architectural Technology and Management from Ulster University and an MSc in Sustainable Development from Queen's University Belfast. Notably, Barry is the current Chairperson of the Passive House Association of Ireland (PHAI). Throughout his academic and professional career, Barry has gained recognition for his outstanding achievements. He received the Belfast Builder’s Association Outstanding Achievement Award for H.N.D in 2006 and the Gibson Institute Scholarship for MSc Sustainable Rural Development in 2009/10. At both national and international levels, he has been acknowledged as a climate change advocate and has participated in key delegations, including the International Youth Forum on Climate Finance and the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 17, COP26 and COP27. Barry's research interests encompass learning, building energy performance, and indoor air quality in buildings. His post-occupancy monitoring research on certified passive house buildings has taken him to various cities, such as Toronto, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Christchurch, where he has presented at esteemed research institutions like the University of Toronto, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California, Penn State, and the Institute of Canterbury. Barry has shared his research findings at numerous international conferences, securing funding for his projects and delivering consultancy training to industry professionals. Beyond academia, Barry actively contributes to the field by serving as a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group (MAG) for architecture in Northern Ireland. He also holds a position on the Climate Change Committee of Royal Society of Ulster Architects, showcasing his commitment to making a positive impact both within and outside the academic sphere.
